ABOUT ME

I am Gerhard Hoffstaedter, a lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Queensland. Previously I was a research fellow with La Trobe University’s Institute for Human Security. My research focuses on development (especially the role of religion), multiculturalism, refugee politics, Islam in Southeast Asia and identity politics in Asia-Pacific. I am also co-founder of the Melbourne Free University project.

I write and publish on the situation and lived experiences of refugees in Southeast Asia, the role of religion and ethnicity in society, especially Malaysia, and the role of religion in development. I am a political anthropologist and have worked as a researcher, consultant, volunteer and teacher to further knowledge, understanding and engagement in these areas.
